Probitas Shipwreck-Diving into the Heart of History
Resting on the seabed of Saranda Bay, the Probitas shipwreck is one of the largest and most famous underwater relics in Albania. Measuring over 100 meters in length, this Italian cargo vessel, built in the early 20th century, was sunk on 25 September 1943, during the dramatic events following Italy’s surrender in World War II.
Hit by German Ju-87 Stuka bombers, Probitas went down just a few hundred meters from the coast of Saranda, where it still lies today as a silent witness to history.
What makes Probitas so special is not only its historical significance, but also the way nature has transformed it over time. The massive steel structure has become an artificial reef full of marine life, where schools of fish gather among the ship’s frames and every section hides new details waiting to be explored.
The scars of the bombing are still visible on the metal structure, creating a rare connection between human history and the underwater world.
Diving the Probitas offers a unique combination of emotions. As you descend toward the wreck, the massive silhouette of the ship gradually emerges from the deep blue, creating an impressive view that even experienced divers find unforgettable.
Its size, open corridors, cargo areas, and well-preserved sections make it one of the most sought-after wreck diving sites in the Mediterranean.
Thanks to its ideal location and depth ranging from approximately 3 to 22-25 meters, Probitas can be explored by a wide range of certified divers. Good visibility and its proximity to the shore have made it one of the main diving attractions of the Albanian Riviera.
Today, more than eight decades after its sinking, Probitas is not just a shipwreck. It is a living underwater museum, a historical monument, and an unforgettable adventure for every diver who wishes to touch history while exploring one of the most unique treasures of the Albanian sea.
